We grabbed our shovels and hit up our archives to find this gem of a flashback!
Seven years ago today, construction crews working on the bulkhead along Water Street near the federal courthouse unearthed quite the discovery: a six-to-eight-foot colonial-era cannon.
Judging by the style and the size of the cannon, it likely dated back to the early to mid 1700’s and was possibly used aboard an English ship, state archeology officials said at the time.
At last check, the cannon is still being stored at the North Carolina Underwater Archeology Center in Forth Fisher.
