Wilmington City Council holding its final meeting before the start of a new fiscal year.
In honor of Independence Day, Council announcing the annual Fourth of July celebration will once again be held at Riverfront Park.
It will feature the first ever POPS concert by the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra with patriotic favorites, classical selections, and current POP songs.
Mayor Bill Saffo will serve as a guest conductor.
“Thank you so much. It has been my dream to have a POPS in Wilmington,” said Liz Scanlon, the executive director of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra.
“To have you and the symphony out there at this magnificent park, and then later in the evening with the fireworks and the celebration, it’s going to be outstanding,” said Mayor Bill Saffo.

Gates will open for the free event at 4:00 p.m. Fireworks will take place at 9:05 p.m.
Next up, Council approving a resolution to join the American Flood Coalition (AFC). The ARC is a nonpartisan group of cities, businesses, and others advocating for solutions to flooding and sea level rise.
This comes after Mayor Saffo recently attended the AFC’s mayors summit in Washington DC.
“We just want to say thank you for the advocacy and for the help and for the technical expertise that we need as communities to make certain that we’re putting the best public policy forward with respect to alleviating flooding and addressing the issues of sea level rise,” Mayor Saffo said.
Joining the coalition does not require any financial support or dues from the City of Wilmington.
Finally, Council taking the second and final vote on the fiscal year 2023 budget.
The budget prioritizes employee compensation and retention, transportation projects, equity and inclusion, affordable housing, street rehabilitation, and infrastructure.
