The effort of restoring the wetland is part of a larger project to improve the health of Burnt Mill Creek.
Crews with the City’s Stormwater Maintenance Division are hard at work, restoring the wetland at Mary Bridgers Park off Chestnut Street.
The wetland was created in 2007 through a partnership with N.C. State University and the adjacent neighborhood. The wetland helps reduce stormwater pollution as well as create a diverse ecosystem for many plants and animals that inhabit the area surrounding the park.
Over the years, the wetland fell in disrepair due to resource constraints. Staff are now working to restore the wetland to its original design and intended function.
So far, City crews have removed invasive plants and dead trees as well as excavated excess sediment. Crews will re-plant the area in the coming months, with the project expected to be completed by April 2022.
